Among early management thinkers, Barnard was uniquely prescient in capturing the two essential aspects of high-functioning organizations.  Effective organizational design is not just a logical flow chart or competent business plan.  When done well, it involves a smooth and sustainable flow between the technical aspects of a system and the human element.  Effective organizational design is very much like the well-known yin-yang and other ancient symbols, but also aligns with exciting, new neuroscience, positive psychology, and social-emotional intelligence capacities.   Perhaps most importantly, it is upstream from sustainable success in other critical areas such as:
